"Progress" by Emily Kettelson_Summer 2011

Alright so here is everything I could find. Obviously there is still work to be done but feel free to tell me what needs to be fixed or what I'm missing. :)

  1. Hi Emily!

Five Characters: I love all of these characters. The only thing I notice is how small your female elephant is to the rest of the characters. Other than that I honestly believe this piece is ready for your portfolio.

Midterm: I love this character and piece! I honestly believe you did a great job with every piece of this assignment. But as I mentioned with Jess's midterm (maybe I just don't like white space) but I just wish there was something to the background. Not a dark color so that it takes away from the piece but maybe a light color of sorts to help bring it out a bit?

Full character pose: It's still nice even if its not in color like it is on your midterm. I keep looking at the right hand for some reason, I don't know why but it seems kind of off to me? I think maybe because her hair is covering her right shoulder? I think that's it.

Action poses: I love these! I feel that this is one of your strongest pieces. It describes the character perfectly well the only thing I have to say is that I wish the last pose would have her guitar in it instead of the microphone stand, I think it would look better that way and blend in more with the other pictures. But that's just me. xD

Both Expressions: I was too lazy to actually split the two expressions up so I'll just describe them both in one section. Anyway...eh there isn't too much to say here. They are both well done and both have expressions that define the characters perfectly. Maybe try different angles instead of one position?

Both Turn around: Same with before I didn't feel like separating them out here. When I was looking at the two I noticed that the characters get a little shorter as they turn, not by much of course but its still seen. I have a hard time with that too, its hard to make sure that the character lines up as you turn them. You could keep the lines and maybe that could help out a little bit. Other than that I don't see anything that is in need of major fixing.

Opposing characters: I love these two characters as well! Another strong piece of yours. Honestly I don't really see anything to fix here. The characters are as opposite as you can get them and very well defined and created. Good job Emily xD!!!

  2. Mid-term character turnaround:
I definitely think this piece is ready for the portfolio cause it looks clean and organized. However, there are a couple things I've noticed about this piece that can be tweaked a bit. First is the 3/4 angle looking at the feet. That needs to be positioned better cause if you look at your feet on the front view, it shows they are slightly apart and at a angle, where as on the 3/4, it just shows them straight. So what I suggest there is bringing the left foot more toward us, and a little pushed out more too towards the front cause right now, it looks like it's slightly behind the other foot. Also looking at the jacket, the bottom flap starts at the front and wraps around, but does it stop at the side or goes all the way around? If it goes all the way around, add the flap in the back or if it stops on the side, give an indication that it does. That's all that should be fixed, and it'll be ready

    Opposite characters:
Definitely your strongest piece that needs practically no work done to it. I think it's ready for the portfolio.

    Baby turnaround:
The only thing I have to say about this one is to change the face on the 3/4 slightly (bring the facials more to the right) so we know it's 3/4 angle, but other than that it's ready

    Baby expressions:
Definitely my favorite piece of yours to look at. Very creative withe expressions and I don't think it really needs any changes to the faces, so I think it's ready to present :)

    Mexican restaurant:
Other than some perspective issues on the left side of your restaurant, I think it looks good. What needs to be fixed is the edge of the table in the back, making it more roundish near the back, both tables need to have a line somewhere in the cloth to show the edge of the table, and tweek the chairs a bit in the back (just bringing them in side view will do, cause otherwise it looks like the chairs are at an angle right now) Good job

All the pics for your mid-term:
    (poses/expressions/reference)

I honestly can say I think this character is ready to go for the portfolio! The poses are exaggerated enough, the expressions tell who she is, (I love the ":D" one) and the individual pose and reference is all complete. Ready to go! ^_^

    5 characters:
I agree with LadyInu here as well; other than the elephant, I think this piece is ready to go for the portfolio. Just clean things up, and you'll be ready! Great job Em ;)

  3. 1st Character Turn Around: I think it's pretty nice, but I can't tell if she looks like she's receding in space because of the art or because of the picture. It also looks like some details aren't in an exact line, but again, that could be the picture...Otherwise I think she's a pretty solid character.

Opposing Characters: I think we all found little to critique on this piece from the beginning, it's pretty great. It might be better if you make the kid more like a kid in her pose - I know she doesn't like her dad, but maybe it'll be better as not a piece that the two are in the same room, but as just two characters who happen to be on the same sheet of paper. It doesn't need it, it's pretty much ready for the portfolio, but just a thought.

Baby Line-Up: Nothing much to say here...pretty much only suffers from the fact it's a photo and the paper isn't 100% centered.

Baby Expressions: Yet again, pretty great...unless you wanted to take the time to completely redraw some in a different angle, it's good to go.

Mexican Restaurant: Mostly this needs some perspective fixing, as everything doesn't feel quite as big/small as it should, but I think all that it really needs is just some more time on the foreground, because it blends with the midground. Thicken the lines a lot, or add more detail, or make the instruments really huge like they're right up next to the camera.

Midterm: I'm combining them all together even if you didn't. l: I think it's pretty snazzy, and very understandable. I didn't even notice the logo before, but it's appropriately sparkly and musician-ish.

Five Characters: Pretty great. I'll just mention what we did when we first saw it, and that's fix the baby's diaper like you did for his turn-around, fix the snout of the bear, and uh yeah that's it.

  4. Turnaround: Her upper body looks amazing. Just watch out for her feet...I think they're trying to float.

Opposites: I see no need to make corrections to this, but I think it would look awesome in color!

Baby Turnaround: We kinda gradually start to lose his football shape in the head, but for the life of me I don't know how to fix that...>.<

Restaurant: Just a few perspective changes are needed, it kinda flattens out in some parts.

Midterm: I love how neat and clean the character sheet is. Maybe make her logo a tad bigger?

Five Characters: I love your designs, but maybe you can make them more in proportion to one another? Like the elephant being the biggest and baby the smallest, etc?

  5. hey

so your style is very consistent nice

your characters have really nice expressions over all.

good work on the rocker girl poses

i've said this to a few ppl, but def get some line weight in there. it really makes a difference.

for the restaurant i would use a slightly higher angle so you could see more of the table tops at the booths and just an over all better view of the place.

    keep up the good work!
